My choice for the best player of the 2010 World Cup, it’s Sneijder or Villa

For every World Cup the contest to win the best player award of the tournament is always tough and this World Cup is not an exception.

In my opinion there are about seven players in four different teams that have performed remarkable well in the tournament making it not an easy task to choose the best among them. (Photo: Sneijder celebrates as he scores)

The players I’m referring to are three from Spain David Villa, Andres Iniesta and Xavi, one from the Netherlands Wesley Sneijder, two from Germany Mesut Oezil and Bastian Schweinsteiger  and Diego Forlan of Uruguay.

For me, it’s Wesley Sneider or David Villa, any one of the two deserves to win the award for their exceptional roles in taking their teams to the grand final. Most of the goals they scored were decisive, won matches for their teams.

Sneijder has been in top form from their opening match against Denmark in the group stage. His is being magnificent scoring in nearly all the games and assisted team-mates to score other goals. His dribbling ability, good passes and goal scoring form have caused a lot of problems for teams including the mighty Brazil who bowed out of the tournament in the quarter-final stage courtesy of Sneijder’s two goals. He has scored four goals so far including one against Uruguay in the semi-final that helped them reached the grand-final for the first time in 32 years. He has won match of the match award twice in the tournament.

His form throughout the year has been impressive, he won the treble with Inter Milan including Uefa Champions league and I believe it helps boosted his confidence a lot and shaped his form well for this World Cup. In my opinion he supposed to be a tough contender for the FIFA World player of the year award in December.

David Villa is currently the tournament’s highest goal scorer with five goals. His overall performance too has been very impressive. His dribbling skills from the wings and accuracy have caused a lot of problems for defenders and goalkeepers in the tournament and he has been exceptionally good in winning matches for Spain. His goals knocked out teams like Paraguay in the quarter-final and Portugal in the second round. He had picked up the man of the match award in the tournament about two or three times and his goals have helped Spain to reach the grand final for the very first time in the history of the World Cup.

The other players too have had a good tournament but I feel Sneijder and David Villa have done much more as they’ve scored decisive goals.

For Iniesta, he didn’t play in their second match in the group stage against Honduras due to injury and he came in as substitute in the second half against Chile in their final group match. Despite of that he has performed well particularly in the knock out stages. His dribbling ability and passes have been very helpful to Spain. He combines well with team-mates particularly Xavi. The two have been the game-maker in the midfield. Innesta has also picked up the man of the match award once.

Xavi dictates the pace of the Spanish team with his marvellous passes. He’s being referred as the machine of the team and he takes all the spot kicks with the exception of penalties.

The two German players Oezil and Schweinsteiger are the revelations of the tournament in my opinion. They’ve performed beyond expectations. The 22-0ld Oezil played well in the midfield in all the matches and even scored a goal against Ghana in their final group match. He was a perfect replacement for the injured Michel Ballack in the midfield. He is a fine left-footed midfielder and because of his overall good performance in the World Cup he might be on his way out of Weder Bremen for a bigger European team.

Schweinsteiger’s form throughout the season both at club and international level has been good and his performance in the World Cup helped Germany reached the Semi-final. He didn’t score a goal but he was strong in assisting his team-mates to score lot of goals. He partnered well in the midfield and was physically strong to win balls from opponents.

Diego Forlan’s overall performance was wonderful. It helped Uruguay to reach the Semis; he played well like a captain and was accurate in his spot kicks. He was able to score four goals in all, before they were eliminated by Holland. He too won the best player of the match award twice in the tournament against South Africa in the group stage and Ghana in the quarter-final.
