Sierra Leone Avian Influenza Secretariat benefits from five day workshop in the Gambia
A six-man delegation from the Avian Influenza Secretariat in the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security has returned home after participating in a five-day workshop in The Gambia.
The objective of the workshop was to expose participants to rapid response in case of the outbreak of Avian Influenza or the outbreak of any trans-boundary related diseases.
Speaking to this press, the Communication and Information Officer at the Secretariat, Ibrahim Karl Samura said the five day ‘Joint Response Team Training of trainers’ workshop in the Gambia which started on the 7th June and ended on 11th June 2010 attracted participants from Sierra Leone, Gambia, Ghana, Liberia and Nigeria.
He disclosed that the facilitators were drawn from AU-IBAR/CDC meaning Center for Diseases Control which has it office in New York, USA.
He added that Sierra Leone’s representation was drawn from the Ministries of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security and Health and Sanitation.
Mr. Samura said the training was intensive as topics were covered on Education and information strategies in the control and preventive of Avian and Pandemic Human Influenza, which would be applied to other trans- boundary diseases.
The information officer further disclosed that vital topics were covered on Influenza overview and epidemiology, rapid response team roles and responsibilities, clinical and post- mortem presentation of Avian Influenza in birds, clinical presentation
Speaking on the purpose of the training, Mr. Sumura said it was to strengthen the capacity of English West African countries about the rapid response for the outbreak of bird flu.
He added that the training created a platform to undertake several trainings in the country. He maintained that the training was important as they have gained wide range of knowledge that would enhance effective and efficient strategies to confront issues about avian influenza disease.
He however commended the AU-IBAR for their tremendous support to their secretariat which has made them stand a better chance to fight avian flu.        Â
