SLP & RSLAF Atrocities Under Bio’s Govt in Sierra Leone

  • 31 Massacred at Pademba Road Prison
  • 5 Slaughtered in Makeni
  • 2 Killed In Tombo
  • 2 Wiped out in Lunsar
  • 1 Crushed in Mile 91
  • 1 Grinded in Tonko Limba & More…

The primary duty of all state security forces in any given state all over the world is to protect lives and properties of citizens and to defend the state in terms of internal and external aggressions.

Sadly under the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) led government of His Excellency Brig. Rtd. Julius Maada Bio-a former coup leader, it now appears that the security forces in Sierra Leone including both the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) and the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) seem to be forgetting their sacred duty for which they were trained as they now seem to be turning their weapons against the citizens who they sworn to protect.

In just under two and half years of the SLPP government, over forty two (42) Sierra Leonean citizens’ lives have been lost to the now dubbed ‘’trigger happy’’  police and military who have continued to use lethal force on armless citizens who dare to protest for their rights.

The continuous use of lethal force on citizens anytime there is a protest, most times unprovoked, by the Sierra Leone Police and the military has now become a déjà vu to citizens.

As rightly put by Dr. Samura Kamara- the former flag bearer of the main opposition, All Peoples Congress Party  (APC), Sierra Leone’s security forces seem to have adopted the policy of ‘shoot to kill’ on their handling of community protest of any sort.

From the SLP/RSLAF killing of a 14 fourteen year old boy in the Tonko Limba bye –elections, to the killing of a youth in Mile 91 during an alleged police raid for cannabis, the crushing of two youths in Tombo Community during a protest against an unreasonable regulation restricting fishing boats from going for fishing after a three day national lockdown, the wiping out of  another 2 Sierra Leonean youths in Lunsar during a community protest against the actions of a Paramount Chief, the massacre of 31 inmates at the Male Correctional Center during a prison riot and the slaughtering of 5 youths in Makeni during a protest against the removal of a standby 1.65MW Generator, Sierra Leone’s security forces have been accused of using unreasonable and unjustified lethal force.

Even more worrisome is the fact that despite the ‘senseless’ killings of citizens by our security forces, justice for those killed has been almost impossible as the perpetrators in most cases walk free without being brought to book.

While this article will not delve into the crux of the various incidences, it is my view that both the Sierra Leone Police and the military under the Bio led Sierra Leone Peoples Party government in the last two years has been way from being professional.

And with all the unreasonable and unjustified killings above coupled with the lack precedent to deter perpetrators, it is my opinion that our security forces who in most cases act on orders from above have now turned their weapons against the citizens they are to protect.
