Orange Leads Democratization and Digital Revolution in Sierra Leone
In only three years yet, the leading mobile company, Orange Sierra Leone has globally presented the country in the telecom business and has firmly stamped innovative first promotion in the telecom industry, leading the democratization of telecoms and the digital revolution in Sierra Leone.
Since the inception of Orange operation in Sierra Leone in 2016, the company has invested about One Hundred and Thirty Three Million Dollars ($133M) in the areas of network modernization and expansion of human resource as well as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
In the areas of networking expansion, Orange has constructed 45 new sites in 2017, 42 in 2018 and 55 new sites in 2019. In three years, Orange has completed 142 new sites, thereby connecting more than One Thousand One Hundred and Seventy (1, 170, 000) new locality with thousands of Sierra Leoneans now accessing data, voice and financial services for the first time.
Orange is now a proud owner of Three Hundred and Ninety One (391) sites across the country with widest network coverage in Sierra Leone, covering about 74% of the county’s population.
In respect of human resource, Orange has invested about Sixteen Million Dollars ($16M) in the areas of capacity building through soft skills, technical and leadership trainings.
The commitment of Orange to employees is to nurture talents and providing exposure opportunities to other Orange affiliates. In the last three years, Orange has invested Four Hundred Thousand Dollars in the areas of women empowerment, health education and the environment.
Orange remains the first operator in Sierra Leone to assist Government in implementing the Free Quality Education (FQE) agenda by pledging the sum of 1.5 Million Dollars in materials assistance over a period of five years.
In 2019, Orange in partnership with the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC’s) and the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary School to launch five years project, designed to support the Government Free Quality Education Agenda including Inter Secondary School Debate and Quiz Competition, open classrooms, Super Coders Academy and hygiene pads for girls.
The execution of the Free Quality Education project commenced in October, 2019 where Orange distributed Two Thousand Hygiene Pads to 20 schools in Western Area Urban and Rural and conducted awareness and sensitization on sexual reproductive health.
In readiness for the country’s digital transformation, Orange Sierra Leone launched the first coding school for young people in the country in partnership with the Directorate of Science Technology and Innovation (DSTI) with an estimated cost of about Leones 2. 75 Billion.
Orange also refurbished the Sierra Leone News Agency (SLENA) administrative building as manifestation of their commitment to promote communication and media transparency. Orange continues to care for 50 Ebola orphans that the company’s adopted since 2015 in partnership with Save Our Souls (SOS).
Orange is committed to care for these kids until they attain the age of 18 years. Orange is also a partner to Thinking Pink Foundation. The company on a yearly basis partners with the Thinking Pink Foundation to raise awareness on Breast Cancer on women through sport and also provided financial support for breast cancer treatment on infected women.
In the area of environment, Orange Sierra Leone remains the first company to secure an Environmental Impact Assessment License from the Environment Protection Agency (EPA).
In recognition of the role Orange plays in the area of environment, the company received an outstanding humanitarian award by Shout Climate Change Africa in partnership with EPA.
