Africell Doles Le1bn Towards Covid-19 Fight in Sierra Leone
As part of their continued commitment to associate itself with the government and people of Sierra Leone during crisis period, the leading mobile phone, Africell, on Wednesday 17th June 2020 donated one billion Leones to Government through EOC, NACOVERC and NACCED.
The cheque was handed over to the Minister of Information and Communications to support government in the fight against COVID19.
Speaking on behalf of Africell, the Chief Executive Officer, Shadi Gerjawi, extended his sympathy to all those affected by COVID-19. He lauded the zeal and resilience with which Sierra Leoneans have adjusted to these trying times. He thanked all health workers who in diverse ways are working round the clock to save lives especially during this crisis.
He reiterated the previous donations made to the Ministry, highlighting the e-learning service they are providing to the University of Sierra Leone, and the various sensitization programmes on their social media platforms including the massive sensitization Afri Radio is sending out to the general public about COVID-19.
“It was in this direction that we decided to donate Le1Bn towards the fight against COVID-19 to assist the government in its effort to break the chain of transmission,” Mr. Gerjawi said.
As a leading mobile phone company in the country, he said they are very much concerned since the outbreak of the virus. He said they have been supporting government to control and win the fight. He said they have donated medical supplies, like PPEs, hand sanitizers, face masks, boots, food and non food items in addition to using their network to send messages to their subscribers to protect themselves. He said all precautionary messages prepared by the Ministry of Health and Sanitation are being cascaded to their subscribers.
Gerjawi assured government that his company is committed to Sierra Leone and will do everything under their power to support government to end the virus.
Responding the Minister of Information and Communications, Mohamed Rahman Swarray said he feels gratified that Africell has come in to make the giant donation. He said the support will go a long way to break the chain of transmission.
“We have been calling on you all to support government and you have always come on board. This is not the first time and will not be the last time,” the minister said. He lauded Africell for the donation stressing that it will be judiciously use for it intended purpose.
The Chief of Staff for NACOVERC, Solomon Caulker also lauded Africell for the donation stressing that the donation will go a long way to win the fight.
