COVID-19 May Defeat Police Efforts at King Jimmy Wharf
The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has applied almost all security measures to stop the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) among traders coming from Lungi to deal in business at King Jimmy Wharf in Freetown during King Jimmy Days.
Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday are the King Jimmy Days which are used by traders coming from various villages in Lungi environs to sell their local products in Freetown.
Since the emergence of COVID-19 in Sierra Leone, the new Local Unit Commander (LUC) and the Operational Officer (Opps) for Central Police Division, Superintendent Abubakarr Kallon and ASP Augustine Koroma have recruited junior Police officers to make sure that everyone coming from Lungi must wash his or hand and wear face mask before landing on the site to avert the spread of the virus.
What is most worrisome according to passersby, the issue of overcrowding is prevailing and people from the interior are not are not observing social distancing because, they said the market space is too small to accommodate the available population coming to the market during market days.
Traders from Lungi argued that all sea travelers from Lungi are in the custom of wearing face mask but buyers in Freetown are not wearing mask when they come to buy food items during business time.
However, people commended the current LUC and Opps. Not only for placing junior officer in all entering and exit points of the market or forcing people to observe all precautionary measures, but for the sacrifice they have demonstrated to continue sensitizing the public on the effect and prevention of the deadly illness.
One of the recommended strategies put in place by the Police in consonant with community people to raise awareness on the reality of the existence of COVID-19 is the playing of sensational music on Corona Virus on every King Jimmy Day since the inception of the virus.
The most interesting aspect about the King Jimmy Wharf is that, traders are dancing and singing to any tune of Corona played by the standby musical sets.
In the nutshell, the Police have applied all effort to prevent people coming to King Jimmy market, but the way and manner traders are clustering during market days in King Jimmy still remains worrisome.
But how can Police stop traders and buyers to come in to the market while traders from Lungi are dealers in essential goods, especially food items.
In that regard, the public is encouraging the Police to continue with their relentless duty with the aim to save lives.
