Is Julius Maada Bio A Sierra Leone Patriot?
President Julius Maada Bio’s address to the nation on our 59th independence anniversary is as empty as usual but with a striking and significant note which need not pass unheeded.
President Julius Maada Bio said, “fellow citizens, let me remind all of us that the task ahead is arduous. Now is the time for every patriotic Sierra Leonean to unconditionally contribute his or her fair effort for Sierra Leone. Patriotism is not about standing up only for people with whom you share the same political loyalties, ethnicity, or region. It is about embracing and caring about people who hold different views, and who belong to different ethnicities and different regions. It is about standing up for the ideal that your country’s call in its hour of need is supreme.”
Mr. President, the task ahead is indeed ardous and this statement cannot be truer than the reality. Also, your definition of patriotism is fundamental to national cohesion.
I am a patriot Mr. President. We are patriots, Mr President, and our duty is to criticize but when we do we are chased out of our homes, locked up on trumped political charges and treated as if we are common criminals and not citizens of this country.
Mr. President, your definition of patriotism is quite at variance with what you and your government is manifesting to those of us who have refused to mortgage our integrity as it is the case with some members of the opposition and even our Members of Parliament.
Yes, indeed, only our collective commitment, determination, focus, and unity of purpose, shall not just prevail over Corona but consolidate a sense of common purpose and destiny at 59 years of Independence.
Except Mr. President is of the conviction Sierra Leoneans are fools, this aspect of your independence message indicts you and your government of failing to do the needful.
