In Sierra Leone, Leadership tussle grips SLPP
The ruling Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) is embroiled in a big tussle over leadership in the House of Parliament.
In a letter dared 2nd April 2020, the SLPP National Leader and Chairman, Dr. Alex Prince Harding literally relieved the Leader of Government Business in Parliament, Hon. Mohamed Sidi Tunis of that all-important position, appointing in his place, Hon. Mathew Nyuma and Hon. Bashiru Sidikie as Leader and Deputy Leader of Government Business respectively.
These changes have sparked controversy and acrimony within Goverment and Party circles.
It would appear that the said changes have not been acknowledged by the current holder of that position, Hon. Sidi Mohamed Tunis, who has also just been appointed to the envious position of Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament. In his Easter Message to colleague Members of Parliament and the general populace, Hon Tunis reaffirmed his position as Leader of Government Business.
While the party’s National Chairman holds the view that Hon. Tunis is no longer the Leader of Government Business, the latter on the other hand believes that he is still the holder of the position until such a time when a final and formal announcement of any decision concerning the Leadership in Parliament is made.
Hon. Tunis’ view on the Parliamentary Leadership has therefore sparked fresh controversy and turmoil in the SLPP prompting the National Leader, Dr. Prince Harding, threatening to invoke Section 77 (K) against the former.
Whether the SLPP Chairman has evidence of anti-party activities against Hon. Sidi Tunis to warrant the invocation of Section 77 (K) as alleged remains to be seen but what is clear from the recent events that have unfolded between the duo speak volume of the fact that all is not well in the SLPP.
