Committee on Education Summons WAEC
The Committee on Basic and Senior Secondary School in Parliament has on Monday 17th February 2020 summoned the West African Examination Council (WAEC) to look into the standard of education and the status of the institution in handling issues around public or external examinations especially in the area of security.
Speaking at Committee Room One in the House of Parliament, Chairman of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Hon. Dominic J. Lavallie Thombe said who is to be blamed if examination candidates have all question papers before entering the hall.
In his statement, the Sub-Regional Officer In-Charge of WAEC, Felix Akuffo Badoo highlighted that WAEC was established since 1952 and our certificate is highly recognized across the sub-region and the world at large. He spoke on the late payment of fees for candidates and as a result, he said Sierra Leone has been the last country in the sub-region to publish result. He proclaimed that Sierra Leone is not printing syllabus and owed WAEC for eleven years contribution adding that the institution is understaffed with twenty nine (29) staff. He said WAEC in Sierra Leone needed 141 staff to curtail exams malpractices.
However, Felix Akuffo Badoo promised to strengthen the security system to tackle examination malpractices across the length and breadth of Sierra Leone.
Hon. Francis Amara Kaisamba, who is Chairman, Finance Committee in Parliament observed that since WAEC is struggling to pay salary and address other unavoidable constraints, he will draw attention of Government through lobbying skill for Government to give subvention to the institution. He lamented that if WAEC get the required support, their work will be credible
