Sierra Leone Constituents Warn Parliamentarians
Constituents in Constituency 107, Western Area Rural District Committee (WARD-C) in Waterloo, Newton, 4 Mile and beyond are calling on the current Members of Parliament (MP) under the All Peoples Congress (APC) ticket, Honorable Abubakarr Fofanah and former MP Claude M. Kamanda to put their differences aside and allow development to continue flourishing.
The wakeup call was made by the constituents after news broken out that the two heavy weights were having serious tussle over makeshift structures which the current MP allegedly ordered to be demolished to construct a modern market squire at Newton.
In an exclusive interview with this medium on what causes the greatest conflict, the former legislator, Hon. Claudius Kamanda who is also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Kays Entertainment Complex at Newton explained that on the 21st December, 2019, traders at 555 Junction forwarded to him that they have been given notice to quit the vicinity where they have been running their businesses for decades.
According to the former lawmaker, the letter which was signed by one Alex T. Kamara stated that the Sierra Leone Road Authority (SLRA) has compelled occupants to leave the right of way.
Without wasting time, Hon. Kamanda said, he called on the Chief Administrator at WARD-C to confirm the source. He said the CA responded that they have no Alex T. Kamara in their data base, adding that the CA said even if he is a staff at the Council, he has no authority to tender such letter.
At this stage, Hon. Kamanda said one Alhaji Musa also came with a tape rule to demarcate the SLRA right of way but he told them to contact SLRA before carrying out their duty. “I contacted SLRA to know the truth of the demarcation but they replied that they did not send anybody to carry out any demarcation exercise at that area,” he told reporters adding that he was advised by the management of SLRA for the affected traders to write a letter of complaint and copy all stakeholders.
He said on the 14th January, 2020, one of the affected traders explained to him that Hon. Abubakarr Fofanah came with thugs and beat him mercilessly. Hon. Kamanda reiterated that he advised the victim to report the matter to the station because he said it was a police matter. He said the young man reported the matter at the Newton Police Post, where a medical form was issued to him.
The former APC Chief Whip in Parliament said one Mr. Peter also reported to him that the Bus Stop at Newton Junction has been demolished under instruction of the current MP.
Upon hearing the shock news, Hon. Kamanda said he immediately reported the matter to OC Madieu Timbo at Newton Police Post, who confirmed to him that a medical paper was given to one Mr. Peter.
At this juncture, Hon. Kamanda said the OC recruited one Constable Thaimu Kamara who accompanied him to the site where the demolition took place. According to Hon. Kamanda when the current MP spotted him at the scene, instead of talking to him politely, he preferred to curse him “Look at the idiot,” and commanded over thirty men believed to be thugs to surround him. He argued that his hat was taken off from him while Councilor Billah held him on his back, adding that one of the thugs stopped his colleague who was trying to chap him with a machete. “I told everybody who was with him to stay calm and follow the due process,” he stated and advanced that they have seek redress and services of a lawyer as the matter will soon be charged to court. He described the scene on that fateful day as rebel attack adding that he is discipline and always preaches discipline to anyone around him.
Hon. Kamanda pointed out that he was able to identify ten of the culprits including Hon. Abubakarr Fofanah. He said three witnesses have made statement to the Police adding that he wanted the law to be interpreted if Hon. Fofanah has right to demolish any place without court order or have right to import people to cause havoc.
Mr. Kamanda said he trusted the Police and the Judiciary and relied on the conclusion of the Magistrates or judges. He labeled the disputed as having nothing to do with politics or political party. He concluded that he was taking treatment and concluded that “I was punched seriously and sustained internal pain,”.
Responding to allegations leveled against him, Hon. Abubakarr Fofanah who doubles as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Adkhan Institute of Management and Technology appealed to the former MP to allow him to work for his people, adding that Hon. Kamanda has ruled for two uninterrupted terms and he has gone.
He said Hon. Kamanda carried out much illegal demolition exercises including his own places but he had no authority by then to fight back because he was in power.
Hon. Fofanah recalled that in 2011, he sought a Shelter Rehabilitation Project; he was the same man that gossip and stopped the scheme because he was in authority. He explained that he was supporting Hon. Kamanda when he was controlling the mantle of power but surprisingly, during the 2018 Parliamentary Election, Hon. Kamanda chosen to support the Coalition 4 Change (C4C) candidate instead of supporting him in the same political party.
He said he always come closer to Hon. Kamanda to strengthen relationship but he always refuses to communicate with him for better understanding to prevail.
On the issue of demolishing the Newton Junction Bus Stop, Hon. Fofanah said it was done to modernize the dilapidated structures and mentioned that most traders welcomed the idea except few who are against transformation.
He accounted that he has done many development including the construction of schools, offering scholarships to pupils and students in university because he has passion for education.
He said he was not expecting Hon. Kamanda to have appeared in person but to allow the intervention of the Police and mentioned that he saw men in plain cloth but Hon. Kamanda identified them as Police officers.
He argued that even though Hon. Kamanda came from far distance to intrude his vicinity but he ensured that his protection was guaranteed as he said, nobody was allowed to touch or say any abusive language against him.
He said because of his uprightness and discipline, even some members who were on the side of Hon. Kamanda during the campaign trail are now with him adding that because he is working in an open door policy, many supporters of the ruling Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) are working with him to take the development of the area to higher height.
Hon. Fofanah said, he is using his personal cash to implement many developmental projects being that the Community Development Fund (CDF) has been withdrawn from representatives by the House of Parliament.
He encouraged Hon. Kamanda to work in collaboration with him not only for the progress of the party but for the benefit of constituency and the country as a whole.
