Like Kabbah, Like Bio, Another ‘Ricegate’ Hits SLPP Govt
A press release issued by the Office of the President dated Friday 10 January, 2020 has relieved four senior government officials of their respective duties until further notice.
The four officials include the minister of Labour and Social Security Alpha Timbo, formerly of the ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Mrs. Emily Kadiatu Gogra, deputy minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Charles Kamanda, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, and Ms. Mamusu Massaquoi, Director of Nutrition, Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education.
According to the release, the four officials are helping the Anti-Corruption Commission with investigations into improper activities by some senior government officials relating to a huge consignment of rice donated by the Chinese Government.
Prior to 2007, it would be recalled that the SLPP government then led by former President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, was saddled with a similar twist just before the general elections which costed the party direly. The rice was donated by former Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi.
State House has promised to inform the public of the outcome of the investigations.
