Ambassador Kargbo grabs award
Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium, Netherland, France, Luxembourg and the Vatican in Italy, Dr. Christian Sheka Kargbo last Saturday received an award from members of the Sierra Leone Central Union in The Netherlands (Holland) for what they described as “his exemplary role in seeking the welfare of Sierra Leoneans in his jurisdictionâ€.
In reading the citation before presenting the award, SLCU’s Chairman, Mohamed Telismi Bangura admitted that since the assumption of office of Ambassador Kargbo, the once rampant deportation of Sierra Leoneans from Netherlands has ceased and that the level of tolerance exhibited by the Ambassador towards his Sierra Leonean compatriots is so much encouraging that “we now feel comfortable to visit our embassy in Brusselsâ€.
Bangura said Dr. Kargbo is always ready to attend their programmes whenever he is called upon and predicted that with the such of collaboration that is in place at present, the 50th Anniversary celebration next year will be a remarkable event.
The occasion itself was part of Sierra Leone’s 49th Independence Anniversary celebration organised by SLCU in Netherland, which is an umbrella organisation comprising of other smaller Sierra Leonean unions in cities across Netherland.
Speaking at the symposium at the Prisma College in Breda on the topic “National Prideâ€, Dr. Kargbo called on his compatriots to always prepare themselves to go back home. “You have to follow my example. I have always been preparing myself to go back home from the day I stepped my foot in Europe to take up my appointment. I refused to denounce my citizenship when I was studying in the US to gain American citizenship simply because I love my country and always prepared to return. Always tell your European friends about the beauty of your country and never hesitate to boast anywhere that Sierra Leone is the most beautiful country on earthâ€, Kargbo said amidst thunderous applause.
He said the Independence celebration must not only be focussed on merry-making but to reflect on what went wrong in the past and how to improve the future.
He called on Sierra Leoneans to refrain from the pull-him-down syndrome by always trying to destroy the hard-earned reputation of others through deliberate fabrication of stories. “Be always prepared to ask others what made them to succeed in life rather than becoming jealous on the achievements of othersâ€, Kargbo reiterated.
Ambassador Kargbo concluded by asking his fellow Sierra Leoneans to always keep asking themselves these three questions; What have I done for Sierra Leone; What am I doing for Sierra Leone and what am I planning to do for Sierra Leone?
In another Independence Day celebration, Sierra Leoneans in the city of Gent in Belgium organised what they called “Independence Show†at the Nova Centrum last Saturday and succeeded in assembling Sierra Leonean beauties in cities across Belgium. There was free typical Sierra Leone food and drinks to the amazement of European friends who graced the occasion.
In Paris where the mission was represented by First Secretary Ahmed Kabba, he reported that the Fund Raising programme organised by the Sierra Leonean community in France was equally successful attracting a good number of Sierra Leoneans and well-wishers.
