A country with a population density of 3.316,328 million people and having a GDP per capita growth of three precent, Uruguay has won the World Cup twice beating Agentina in the finals in 1930 and Brazil in 1950.

The country also finished third in the 2010 World Cup and won the 2011 Copa America.

However though, Uruguay is yet to make a mark in the Olyympic Games as it has only won two gold, two silver and six bronze medals in total.

Nothwithstanding, the Uruguayans are prepared to host the 78th AIPS Congress mid April, 2015 at the Radission Hotel in Monteviedo.

Meanwhile, the 2014 Baku AIPS Congress unaminously aproved the 2013 reports of the President Gianni Merlo, and that of both the outgone and acting Secretary General and the Tresurer.

During the five-day event which was officially declared opened Monday 28th April 2014 by the Azerbaijan Minister of Youth and Sports Azad Rahimov at the JW Marriot Absheron Hotel, the AIPS-Global President Gianni Merlo thanked the host for what he described as “the best reception the AIPS has enjoyed in recent times.”

He further praised  the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, who he said had an open mind and ready to improve the standard of sports journalism in that country following a private discussion between the two during a welcome dinner hosted last Sunday by President Ilham Aliyev.

Giving a brief rundown about the 90 years history of the formation of the AIPS in July 1924 in Paris France, President Merlo said the decision of those six AIPS Founding Members to establish the association had ‘open a new way for the sports journalists of the world.’

He said the photo depicting the AIPS first meeting in a boxing ring means sports journalists have to always fight hard and work together to defend their independence and rights.

Azerbaijan Minister of Youth and Sports Azad Rahimov whilst explaing to the gathering about his country’s plans to host the first European Games June this year, said sports jourtnalists are essential in promoting and celebrating sports around the world.

He said: “your ability to capture events and report the stories professionally for entertainment makes your job essential and very important.”
