Islamic Lecturer interprets corruption

“Corruption does not only detect into the hands of our leaders but it can also be witnessed at home among families.’’

Sheikh Nagib Suma, a Lecturer of Islamic Studies at the Institute of Islamic Studies at 58 Wilkinson Road in Freetown made this observation yesterday while responding to an in-house interview held at the Iranian Cultural Centre.

Sheikh Suma stated that one of the verses of the Holy Quran states that God said, ‘’Do not corrupt the earth that has been created good.’’

He described corruption in different forms stating that when a woman fails to bring up a child according to the teachings of Islam and the child gets spoilt, that woman should be blamed because as he puts it, mothers are responsible to look after children at home while the father is away striving to get the daily bread of the family. He described this type of corruption as matrimonial, noting that here women are the major causes of this type of dishonesty.

He affirmed that when conditions of the hospital, electricity , food supply, education or any other essential service of a country are deplorable or not performing to the expectations of the people, we must not be obliged to the Government since it is a social problem but we must also hold responsible the people charged with the responsibility to be in charge of those institutions like the Nurses employed in hospitals, engineers taking care of electricity, educationists/teachers/lecturers among others, whom he said, should be willing to render essential services to the people.

Sheikh Suma also emphasized that the way and manner corruption is figured out among business people including local and international traders has totally destroyed our nation. He cited rice retailers in the market who are selling with half cups but when they go to buy from the wholesalers they receive full cups.

“Is this the way a corrupt free society should live,?” Sheikh Suma queried.

He noted that selfishness, greed, and tribalism are some of the bad results of corruption which, he must not be allowed to exist in our midst.

He stated that our leaders should be non-partisans and helpful to their subjects if societies are to be corrupt free.

He concluded by admonishing young people to concentrate on Quranic education and refrain from taking harmful drugs if they want to have bright futures.
