Fresh Elections for Freetown Municipality start this week

The prevailing Local Government Act of 2004 makes provision for the election of Ward Committee members charged with the responsibility to cooperate with the Freetown City Council (FCC) and take development to the forty-nine wards in the municipality.

It should be noted that after the elections of the Mayors and councilors, the local councils should conduct the elections of ward committee members and these elections would commence this week where ten committee members in each ward will be elected.

The Public Relations Officer of the FCC, Cyril Mattia informed that only those with National Electoral Commission identity cards would take part in those elections. He said the elections would take place in eight wards each day until they cover all forty-nine wards in the municipality.

According to him, voting will be done for one hour only and the venues for the exercise would be announced by the FCC. Mr. Mattia noted that there is need for at least five women to be voted into each committee so that they would use their positions to advocate for developmental opportunities for their wards. He assured that the FCC would conduct the elections with fairness and transparency.

The ward committee elections are not partisan based as the would-be elected ward committee members are expected to serve their wards for the purpose of improving the communities in the midst of lacking facilities. The sitting councilor serves as the chairman of the ward committee as they meet regularly to map out strategies on behalf of the ward and its inhabitants. The committee seeks development agenda like scholarship for learners, how to improve sanitation and other things within the ward.
