ECOWAS, development partners to hold crucial meeting in Abuja

The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, will present the economic outlook for West Africa in 2010 to the region’s development partners during the 7th edition of the ECOWAS-Development Partners coordination meeting which opens on Monday, 25th January 2010 at the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja.

In his “Progress Report on the Regional Integration Process in West Africa: Stakes and Perspectives”, Dr Chambas is expected to project a 4.7 per cent growth for the region in 2010, higher than the 4.4 per cent recorded in 2009.

The President’s presentation will also highlight the achievements in the region’s Community Work Programme which will in 2010 focus on the negotiation of the Economic Partnership Agreement with the European Union, the creation of a common market, regional infrastructure development, implementation of the agricultural policy, human development, institutional capacity building, private sector development and multilateral convergence.

The presentation will be followed by others covering the Financial, Administrative and Organizational Procedures of the ECOWAS Commission: Evolution and Perspectives; as well as ECOWAS Commission’s Financial Performances since the Restructuring of the Institution.

There will also be other presentations indicating measures in place for coordinating the effective implementation of sectoral programmes, with specific emphasis on the ECOWAS Common Agricultural Policy (ECOWAP), the West African regional integration agenda and the ECOWAS Conflict Prevention Framework in the field of peace and security.

Tagged “Strengthening Coordination for Effectiveness of Supports to Regional Integration”, the two-day meeting will, among other issues, outline the main evolutions noticed in the regional integration process throughout the implementation of programmes and reforms undertaken to enhance ECOWAS’ institutional and organizational performances. Participants are expected to re-appraise the existing coordination mechanisms and modalities with a view to reinforcing them.

They are also expected to create and consolidate on strategic and coordinated approach of the partnership promotion as well as resource mobilization and utilization.
