CBF Youth League reaches its grand finale!

On Saturday 30 June, the CBF Youth Development League celebrated its end of season finals in Freetown, showcasing the most exciting young footballers in Sierra Leone.  On a day that shifted between torrential downpours and bright sunshine, the Grand Final saw the winners of the Boys and Girls League in each region travel to the capital Freetown to battle it out for the title.

CBF League Manager Pete Beeley said: “Saturday’s thrilling finale was an excellent end of the CBF League’s third season.  Despite the rain, thousands of people came along to support the teams. Congratulations not only to the teams that made the Finals, but to all those taking part this season. It is great to see every team continue to compete with passion, determination and respect for the League’s principles.”

Now in its third season, the League’s unique model awards league points for school attendance, fair-play, and delivering community development projects, as well as football match results.

Children in the League are given scholarships that pay for their schooling each year thanks to their team’s sponsor in Sierra Leone. This season sponsors have included banks, hotels and even the British Army, as well as individuals, such as the country’s most famous footballer Mohamed Kallon and staff of the UN, DfID and international companies.

Next season we are opening up sponsorship opportunities for teams and groups in the UK. Three UK sponsors are already signed up for next season –Huracan FCLong Lost Brother Records and The Collective – get in touch at sponsor@craigbellamyfoundation.org to find out how you can get involved.

The 2012 CBF League Finals results

Girls League: Malimba Queens 2-2 JamJam FC (JamJam won 3-1 on penalties)

In a fantastic showcase for women’s football, this exciting 2-2 draw was eventually decided by penalties. Heartbreak for Malimba as they came up against a JamJam keeper on fine form, saving three penalties.

Boys League (u12s): Malcolm FC 1-0 DJ Med FC

A tense stalemate for much of the match, Malcolm left it late to secure the u12 championship in their first season in the CBF League.

Boys League (u14s): Area Best 1-2 Malcolm FC

Despite being the favourites and on top for much of the game, Area Best conceded two late and indeed soft goals to give Malcolm the victory they needed to make a clean sweep of the 2012 National Finals.
