Museum Workers go on Strike

Mohamed Thorley and eight others working for the Sierra Leone Museum have gone  on a sit down strike for two weeks over non payment of salaries for nine months.  According  to Mohamed Thorley, since they were employed they have been coming to work regularly and on time with no indisciplinary conduct, but salaries has been denied them since last year October.

According to the Assistant Secretary General and Organizer of the Sierra Leone Labour Congress Fredrick Koroma he said moves have been made to the Ministry of Tourism and Culture for workers of  the  Sierra Leone Museum to get  their back log salaries noting that the estimated amount since July 2011 to February 2012 stands at Le 41 million.

He said the reason for the delay is that government was only given subvention with salaries and other allowances included in the subvention.

He said the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural have long instructed the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development to remove the subvention from their salaries but since then no improvement has been made, Fredrick said.

Hawanatu Bockarie, Head of Communication in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development said there are a lot of similar cases with them but she will contact the Director of budgeting on the said matter.
