ECOWAS emergency meeting on Mali

The Economic Community of Western African States (ECOWAS) in reaction to the coup d’état in Mali by junior Military Officers has called an Emergency Meeting of all West African Heads of States and Government on Tuesday 27th March 2012 at the Ivorian capital, Abidjan under the new ECOWAS Commission Chairman H.E. Alhassan Duramani Ouatara.

The ECOWAS Press Release from the President of the Commission, H.E. Desire Kadre Ouadraogo of Burkinafaso did not only express its concern and disappointment on the latest developments in Mali but also categorically condemned the announcement of the overthrown of the democratically elected Head of State and government of the Republic of Mali, H.E. President Amadou Toumani Toure in the early hours of Thursday March 22nd 2012 by the National Committee for the Rectification of Democracy and the Restoration of the State (CNROR) led by Capt. Amadou Aya Sarogo.

The release furthered that the usurpation of power from a democratically elected Government particularly to a month that the nation was due to go to the polls to elect a new President was unacceptable.

The ECOWAS Commission advised the CNROR (military junta) strongly to immediately relinquish power and restore constitutional order and to observe the provisions of the supplementary protocol on democracy and good governance and the rule of law. Also, the ECOWAS release went on to warn and remind the military junta (CNROR) of its responsibility to protect life and ensure the safety and security of the president and members of his government and the entire population and to respect state institutions.

The ECOWAS Commission also expressed its dismay over the overthrow of the legitimate government and cautioned the rebel MNLA against taking advantage of the situation by continuing with atrocities and seizure of territory in the north. It urges the movement and all other armed military groups in the north to observe an immediate ceasefire and lay down their weapons.

Meanwhile, the World Leaders too have unanimously joined in by condemning the Mali Coup and refered to Mali as one of the most stable democracies in Africa in the last 20 years. President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan took the lead, the United Nations, the United States of America, European Union, African Union, and their Colonial Master, FRANCE.
