SLAJ not received money from Government in over four years

Freetown: The attention of the National Secretariat of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has been drawn to misleading articles in certain sections of the press about government’s financial support to the association for its 18th Bi-annual Conference in Kenema last year.

The Secretariat wishes to remind its members and the general public, like it did during and after the said conference, that the money received was a personal contribution from President Ernest Bai Koroma and not from the government of Sierra Leone.

It has not been a secret deal among the executive as some journalists want the public to believe even though they know what the truth is. In fact, a general meeting was held for that purpose where the executive declared all contributions received in the run-up to the conference in Kenema last year. It was also contained in conference documents. We wish to state that this executive has never received a single Leone from the Government of Sierra Leone as was the case when the Tejan Kabbah administration gave subvention to then Association.

The Secretariat views this latest misrepresentation of the fact by some media houses as a deliberate attempt to discredit the reputation of its national officers and bring the association into disrepute.

However, the Secretariat wishes to call on the government of Sierra Leone to make real its commitment to provide annual subvention for the association, which has not been received in the last four years.
