Sierra Leone’s Justice Fofanah Participates In New York Human Rights Seminar

Washington, D.C.: Monday 24th October, 2011: The inaugural lecture for this year’s Human Rights Seminar, held at The City University of New York, was presented by Sierra Leone’s High Court Judge, Justice Abdulai Sheikh Fofanah.

The theme of the seminar was, “Assessing Compliance: The Role of Human Rights Monitoring Mechanisms”.

The Seminar aims at studying how monitoring mechanisms are utilized to assess compliance with international human rights norms and standards.

Justice Fofanah’s presentation was on the topic, “Governmental Action in Monitoring Compliance With International Human Rights Norms –The Sierra Leone Experience”.

 After the presentation on Thursday on the Sierra Leone experience, interesting discussions on the Human Right situation in Sierra Leone followed, during which the 53-year-old Judge articulated impressive and enlightening comments within and outside the context of his presentation.

A large number of participants were drawn from the International Human Rights Center, including Professors, Researchers, Students from Harvard, and other Universities in the United States and civil society actors/activists.

The Seminar is organized yearly by the Centre for International Human Rights and was held at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY –The City University of New York, giving the Sierra Leonean High Court Judge the honour to make the inaugural presentation, delivered between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00p.m on Thursday 20th October, 2011.

Justice Abdulai Sheikh Fofanah  is expected back in Freetown just before the end of the month.
