Daniel Kanu Resigns from APC Dallas for Political Advancement
Before passing the Secretary Generalship to Cornelius Macarthy, Daniel Kanu declared his intention to the group, All People’s Congress Social and Cultural (APCSC), Dallas Chapter that he is returning home finally to contribute to the vibrant development of his mother land, Sierra Leone. At the group’s monthly meeting two months past, Mr. Kanu, the man who has served the group as Secretary General since its inception in 2002 has made a shrewd and predictable decision to change his life to become more dutiful to his native country.
Many group members were astonished by the news that their long serving and dynamic Pen Pusher was not only relinquishing his position but was actually returning home to Sierra Leone. Referencing the imminent vacuum, his exit may cause in the APC Dallas in particular and the APC North American branch in general some people say. Mr. Kanu’s farewell speech laid bare his firm belief in putting his country first before anything else. In a statesman fashion, the erstwhile former Secretary General told his comrades that he was returning home to answer to a higher calling. He informed his audience that for the third straight time, the people of Lokomasama are calling on him to represent them in parliament.
Perhaps the most memorable aspect of Mr. Kanu’s legacy with the APC Dallas is his striking ability to project the positive image of his party and its leadership at every given opportunity. He saw every gathering of fellow Sierra Leoneans as a recruiting opportunity. Whilst Mr. Sheku Tejan Koroma – former Minister of Health and Sanitation is the founder of the APC Dallas chapter way back in 2002, Mr. Kanu is credited for the rapid growth and expansion of the chapter within a short period of time. Today, the APC Dallas chapter is one of the most vibrant and admired APC chapters in North Americas and Daniel Kanu is one of the pillars of that. The declaring contestant for next year’s Parliamentary elections is leaving behind a remarkable legacy worthy of emulation.
Mr. Kanu’s overwhelming effort and keen interest in the All People’s Congress APC party describes the extent of his personality for firmness and gentleness. Most of his contemporaries have expressed to me that Daniel’s personality trait is not something that developed with age, but instead present since birth. His likable personality and people’s skills made him the darling of every social grouping he joined here in Dallas.
The Sierra Stars Soccer Association, another formidable Sierra Leonean club in the Dallas Metro-plex, was founded by Mr. Kanu and few others in 1993. In 2002, Mr. Kanu resigned his post as Team Manager after he was elected secretary General of APC Dallas. But up to this day his name remains a household name in the soccer club. Now Mr. Kanu is resigning as Secretary General of APC Dallas to run for parliament in Sierra Leone.
Few weeks ago, the hopeful Member of Parliament for constituency 56 in the Lokomasama Chiefdom, Port Loko district, got a shot in the arm! His long time friend, Mohamed Bai Sama-now, P.C Bai Maro Lamina Kamara Ngbathor 11, was elected Paramount Chief, following a protracted election that culminated in court action that went all the way to the Supreme Court of Sierra Leone. Mr. Kanu told me that, the elected Chief’s camp, now candidate Daniel Kanu was with their side when it was unfashionable to do so. And now, they are poised to re-pay Mr. Kanu’ benevolent gesture by voting for him to be their Member of Parliament.
Sources also say that Mr. Kanu would be a formidable competitor that would defeat any SLPP candidate for the much coveted seat, if the APC give him the party symbol. If the result of his maiden meeting on May 7 at his cousin’s residence in Freetown with stakeholders in the constituency is anything to go by, it would be safe to predict a smooth sailing for candidate Kanu. As one of the attendees put it, “Mr. Daniel Kanu went to the United States long time ago, but he never left.”
Meanwhile a group friends and family of Daniel Kanu would be hosting what has been referred to as a ‘Never to-be-forgotten’ fund-raiser dance here in Dallas, in honor of Mr. Kanu. The entire APC Dallas Membership, and APC Houston, as well as friends of Mr. Kanu, are expected to throng the 9650 Skillman Street Hall. A cross section of the APC North American branch is also expected to grace the occasion. Of course, the opposition SLPP members in the city are sure to lend a hand to this socialite and true mixer gentleman.
