26 Okada monitors passed out from training

The Sierra Leone Commercial Bike Riders Union (SLCMBRU) Saturday 6th held a passing out ceremony for 26 Bike Monitoring officers that completed training in management and movement of Okada riders countrywide.

The president of the Union, Daniel D. Tucker, highlighted the constraints they have been facing since the establishment of the Union.

He outlined some of the aims and objectives of the training and said the monitoring officers will be issued with full uniforms to enable them to distinguish themselves from impersonators/criminals.

He further revealed that they now have more than 11,000 Okada riders countrywide and that the police, singularly cannot uphold the free flow of traffic without the support of brother organizations such the already trained monitors.

Delivering his key note address, the traffic management coordinator, Superintendent AM Sovula, lauded SLMBRU and complimented efforts of the police and admonished the monitoring officers to be law abiding and work in conformity with the law.

He warned the monitoring officers that the power given them does not exceed that of the police.

He said the police will always be there to guide them in their function, but cautioned that they refrain making any attempt of charging violators to the court.

Assistant Superintendent Flavious Sesay congratulated the newly passed out officers and advised them to do their job professionally.

He gave warning to all the monitors to refrain arresting any bike based on interest, but rather try to enforce the law accordingly.

The Secretary General of National Youth Coalition, Mr. Salieu A.B. Kargbo, praised the management of SLBMRU for their tremendous efforts in managing the activities of Okada riders.

He stated that the Youths have now gained employment through commercial bike ‘Okada’ transportation thus reducing the rate of crime in the city.
