BBC African Footballer of the Year to be announced Dec 17

Football specialists have described this year’s competition between the five African top stars vying for this award as a close contest. Voting is now closed after tens of thousands of agog fans have finally cast their prestigious votes for their top African stars across West and Central Africa.  (Photo:  Barcelona’s  Samuel Eto’o)

Ghanaian duo Sunderland Gran and Marseille young talent Ayew, Ivory Coast’s former winner Didier Drogba, Manchester City’s Yaya Toure, and the man who was part of Inter Milan Champions League history against Barcelona Samuel Eto’o will know their fate on Friday 17th on the BBC fast track.

This is the one award nominated by football fans across the world. Drogba took the award last year; previous winners include Mohamed Aboutrika of Egypt and Togolese star Emmanuel Adebayor.

Both Sunderland striker Gyan and Marseille midfielder Ayew starred for Ghana as they reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time.

The 29-year-old forward Eto’o played a vital role as his Italian side Inter Milan won the Champions League and a domestic double.

English Premier League side Chelsea secured a league and cup double for the first time in their history thanks in part to the goals of 32-year-old striker Drogba.

Meanwhile, Toure, 27, became the highest-paid footballer in English football following his move from Barcelona to Manchester City earlier this year.
