Cause for the dislike of Mathematics and Integrated Science at BECE level by female students
Mathematics and science hold a rather unique place in our society; most people in our society will accept the fact that mathematics and science are vital for the continued growth of most great nations, both for expanding internal advancement and for the maintenance of a leading role with world community.
On the other hand, these people who have little doubt about the importance of mathematics and science usually feel completely inadequate in these subjects. They seem to believe that it is a mysterious force to be understood by chosen few.
This study investigated the factor responsible for the poor performance of girls in mathematics and integrated science at the Basic Education Certificate Examination in the West Africa. Literature relevant to this story were reviewed. Data for the research was collected using questionnaires and personal interviews with teachers and students. Data collected were presented in a tabular form, simple percentages and quantitative analyses were made.
For the analysis of the research, the findings of the study revealed that majority of the teachers used wrong methods in teaching mathematics and integrated science; again most of these teachers do not use teaching aids when teaching these subjects.
On the other hand, most girls have negative attitude towards the learning of these subjects, that is, mathematics and integrated science. They do not have time for personal study and are inattentive during mathematics and integrated science classes.
Moreover, most schools lack teaching and learning materials for mathematics and integrated science; no in-service training courses for teachers were among other things discovered to be the major problems responsible for the poor performance of girls in this subject.

In explaining why female students are supposedly weak in mathematics and science classes, the writer stated among other things that, “they do not have time for personal study and are inattentive during mathematics and integrated science classes.” So, why are they “inattentive.”? Does the writer have any scientific rationale to support this highly questionable conclusion.? I am aware of many male students who are equally inept in mathematics and science classes. Besides, doesn’t the writer realize that women dominated Mathematics and Science subjects from ancient times right through the nineteenth and early twentieth century? They lagged behind primarily because of discrimination at academic institutions dominated by males, and archaic cultural beliefs such as those manifested by the author of the article.

Well, we are trying to solve at least the Maths problem. From September, beginning in Central Freetown, male and female students will be able to take part in “Essential Maths for Junior Secondary School Students”. We provide materials, structured study and more.
