UNIOSIL PPRC INTER-PARTY DIALOGUE

The Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) and  UNIOSIL hosted an Inter-Party Dialogue that focused on the need to promote a peaceful and non-violent local council election as well as ensure adherence to the PPRC Code of Conduct for Political Parties.

Representatives of the All Peoples Congress (APC), the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP), the Peoples Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC), the National Democratic Alliance, the Peoples Liberation Party (PLP) and the United National Peoples Party (UNPP) took part in the meeting. Also in attendance were the representatives of  the National Commission for Democracy (NCD), the  National Electoral Commission (NEC), and Sierra Leone Police(SLP).

The resulting dialogue was very positive and the discussions were held in a constructive and amicable manner. The political parties underscored their commitment to the holding of a peaceful local council election as well as the need for complete compliance with the PPRC and NEC Codes of Conduct. The Sierra Leone Police gave a detailed briefing to the political parties on its security arrangements for the elections and provided strong assurances of its continuing neutrality in all political issues.

There was full agreement by all concerned that political parties ensure that their members refrain from engaging in any activity which is detrimental to the holding of a peaceful election. It was also agreed that the challenges posed to female candidates in the local elections in the area of personal security warrant the special attention of the Sierra Leone Police.

UNIOSIL and the PPRC commend the political parties for their contributions to the dialogue and the spirit in which the discussions were conducted. UNIOSIL and the PPRC look forward to organizing further dialogues and meetings with the political parties as part of efforts to promote a peaceful, credible and transparent local council election.
