Trust Fund for War Victims

News reaching this medium reveals that the National Commission for Social Action will soon launch the ‘Trust Fund for War Victim’ that will help address the long awaited issue of reparation after the bitter and gruesome war experienced in the country. The programme, it is further revealed, will be launched by the President of the Republic, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma very soon for the benefit of those that carry physical and psychological scars of the war.

The Trust Fund, according to the Commissioner of NaCSA, Coton Sesay, will be launched as an initiative of the president and the government of Sierra Leone to attract the international community, benevolent Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad, corporate entities, and charitable organizations, to contribute to the Fund so that the eligible beneficiaries of the reparation process will be compensated to some extent.

According to Commissioner, Mr. Coton Sesay, the fund is meant to be a pool of funds to finance the reparation programmes and contributions financial and otherwise should be provided to the fund through Government allocation, Donor Support, funds from other legal sources, and contributions from corporate entities to help the beneficiaries of the reparation process as dictated by the TRC AC etc. Various categories of beneficiaries (amputees, other war wounded, sexually violated women, child victims, war widows, and dependents of victims with fifty percent reduction in earning capacity) will be registered and validated before the fund is made available to them, he said

Inter alia; Sierra Express has learnt that the funds will be issued in the form of pension, micro grant, skills training, free physical health care, psychosocial counseling, educational support for school going children, symbolic reparation for community healing, and shelters for the most vulnerable groups. Those that will be involved in the management and execution of the Trust Fund, Sesay said, will include the office of the President, United Nations Integrated Peace Building Office in Sierra Leone (UNIPSIL) Civil Society, Inter Religious Council, Ministry of Finance, Parliament, and Victims Association.
