The state of SLPP in North America is strong

Our party, The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), has an unquestionably strong record of opening up and expanding democratic spaces.  This includes not only accommodating a plurality of voices, but also of engaging in productive dialogues with groups and persons who agree or disagree with the party’s inherent core values of tolerance and mature and progressive dialogues. The vibrancy of the free press and the multiplicity of civil society and other advocacy organizations during SLPP rule indicate so. Our party has also historically built strong administrative hierarchies and solid institutions of governance. Our party’s record in government between 1996 and 2007 and from independence to 1967 is testament to this.

Allow me to inform your readership that the party’s cohesive administrative and grievance resolution hierarchies are intact, and, in the very best traditions of the SLPP, we expect party members to and they do use those channels to freely communicate their views, fair or ill. Additionally, the SLPP in North America has taken the unprecedented step of expanding interactional space among all the chapters in North America.  Real party members would use the party conference and constitutional dispute resolution mechanisms to voice concerns.

The state of the party in North America is strong.  The SLPP in North America is maintaining a sustained and impactful presence in the life of the SLPP. The region was represented at the recent national party convention; the region has financially supported the party in Sierra Leone to victory in all of the several bye-elections from Tongo and Lugbu to Bo North, Blama and Pujehun Constituency 91; the region is gearing up for a peaceful and democratic convention in Los Angeles and the party has already elected electoral commissioners.

The doomsday misrepresentation in the article “SLPP North America Hopelessly Divided and On the Verge of Disintegration” is not truthful and correct. The obvious untruths and misrepresentations verging on libelous assertions in instances are the worst one would expect from a very desperate and well-known pseudonym (because there is no SLPP member in Washington DC by the name of Samuel Kargbo) whose singular destructive nonsense does not enhance or promote the core values of the SLPP. If he is trying to invent a crisis with these misrepresentations, he will fail as he has always failed. The party in North America and in Sierra Leone will therefore not further dignify his hooey. The party hierarchy and leadership is intact. Real SLPP members will proceed with party business.

Dr. P. K. Muana, Spokesman for the Chairman of SLPP in North America
