In Sierra Leone Police Raid Tripoli – Innocent Women, Youths Victimized

On Wednesday, 16th October, 2019, a high number of armed Police Officers from Ross Road Police Division raided Tripoli, an area at Susan’s Bay in Freetown where innocent women and youths were victimized, mobile phones and money allegedly catered by the radical officers.

Many described the manner in which the brutal Police Officers entered the area at around 5:00am on that fateful day when people were in deep sleep as more than rebel attack or revolution time.

It could be recalled that Police Officers met some women who were in deep sleep naked in their rooms with their husbands. One of the women, who spoke on condition of anonymity alleged that the Police officers who entered the room unnoticed, did not only see her nakedness during the odd hours but, they also provoked her that “You Body Fresh ooo)”, which means the woman is fleshy with big waist.

The most disheartening part of this episode according to victims of the Police raid is that, the Police did not only concentrated in apprehending people they perceived as bad men and women or searching for illegal or narcotic drugs in that area but were also catered away, money, mobile phones and other portable properties.

The victims expressed amazement that, the Police who are expected to serve the purpose of protecting lives and properties turned human rights abusers, which was evidenced by the manner in which some helpless victims of the Police raid were brutalized and beaten mercilessly.

Investigation revealed that the over fifteen (15) jobless youths and women who fall prey during the raid were taken to various Police stations being that the Ross Road Police Station was filled with suspects who were waiting to be charged to court.

Nevertheless, victims of the raid accused the Police of extortion as each of them spent over three hundred thousand Leones (Le 300,000) to secure their release while those who cannot afford to pay the huge charges are still in detention.

The unanswered million question is that, are the Police normally raided civilians to control crime or to enrich their personal desire?, if so, our society is heading for doom for the fact that the civilians are defenseless while the Police are using instrument of suppression and their offices to trample upon the rights of peaceful citizens.

Findings unearthed that most of the people who fall victims of the Police attack are not criminals but hardworking youths who are always in the street to find their hand to mouth.

After making lot of arrest, the Police replied that they would pick out the fish from the bone but in the end, all the victims spent huge capital to have him or herself released from detention. Is that not money finding policing rather than protecting lives and properties of defenseless civilians?.
