Former VP Unveiled As The African Face Of Mercy Ships 2019

Mercy Ships Founders Weekend in Arizona, in April 2019, the unveiled Chief Alhaji Samsumana as the African Face 2019.

Sierra Leone like several countries in Sub Sahara Africa (SSA) continue to be inhibited by poor health services to their citizens.

The lack of sufficient trained medical professionals, medical equipment, health centers, decent remuneration, government policies, and endemic poverty, has resulted in the need for SSA governments to improve their social contracts to their citizenry within the health sector.

Delivering the improved healthcare demanded by the citizenry, and as stated by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has remained an uphill task for many SSA governments alone.

Africa Mercy Ship was founded by Don and Deyone Stephens and funders, who in 1978 decided to help developing countries in Africa conduct free health services to the continent, by establishing a hospital ship.

Their support in surgeries, orthopedic, ophthalmology and more, have rendered a great service to its beneficiaries in Africa, immediately boosting the healthcare facilities of any territory, for the period that they operate there.

Sierra Leone has been privileged to have benefited from the Mercy Ships services five times in the last fifteen years.

During the Founders Weekend, which incorporates a series of activities, the Founders discussed to the completion of their new hospital ship under construction, known as the GLOBAL MERCY SHIP.

As the Face of Mercy Ships, Chief Alhaji Samuel Samsumana was hosted as a special guest and he was interviewed by the President of Mercy Ships, Lady Rosa Whitaker Duncan-Williams.

In the interview, the Former Vice President acknowledged the benefit the ships have brought to Africans to and applauded the great philanthropism of the Founders and their funders.

Chief Samsumana furthered in his appeal for another visit of the African Mercy Ship to Sierra Leone.

“I am convinced that Mercy Ships will reach out to the government of Sierra Leone, with a view to organising a trip  of to the country to offer support to our health infrastructure. As a true patriot, I shall do all I can in my capacity as the African Face of Mercy Ships to support the process.”

The Mercy Ships Founders Weekend took place from April 26-28 in Arizona, USA.
