DG Fires Four Directors At NATCOM in Sierra Leone
The Directors of Finance, Admin, Research and Public Affairs at the National Telecommunications Commission (NATCOM) have been given sack letters effective 26th March 2019 by the Director General, Maxwell Hinga Massaquoi.
In a letter dated 22nd March 2019, Maxwell, titled “End of Employment with the National Telecommunications Commission’, the Director General informed the four Directors that “as of 26th March 2019, your employment with the National Telecommunication Commission will come to an end”.
No substantive reason was stated by the DG for his action, nor was the Board of Commissioners apparently approved the decision to dismiss the four Directors.
In late December 2018, the toothless bulldog Deputy Director General Daniel Bobson Kaitibie, issued an Internal Memorandum dismissing all staff of the Commission.
The DDG, who carries with him an unimaginable air of arrogance, is in the habit of boasting that he is in custody of secret information about the president and the 2018 runoff election which makes him untouchable by the president and therefore can do whatever pleases his ego.
Again, this rather arbitrary action by the DDG was met with stiff resistance from the Board and the Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Information and Communications.
Inside sources say that the DG and the DDG have since embarked on a strategy of intimidation based on region, tribe and party politics.
The one million dollar question exercising the minds of informed members of the public is whether the DG and the DDG have the powers to dismiss Directors.
Since their appointment, the DG and DDG have been running the show at NATCOM with no regard to the Board of Commissioners, allegedly with the covert support of the President, Chief Minister and the Minister of Information, reducing the Board to a toothless bulldog.
