St Patrick’s Day Sierra Leone – Freetown Mayor Lights Up Cotton Tree

The Mayor of Freetown City Council (FCC), Yvonne Aki Sawyer (in photo) in partnership with the Irish Government has lights up Cotton Tree to mark the 227 years’ celebration of the Saint Patrick’s Day, a national day of ILM.

The program which was held late in the evening attracted the Irish Ambassador, Government officials and other various stakeholders in front of the National Museum on Tuesday, 12th March, 2019.

The Mayor expressed happiness that the entire Cotton Tree area has been totally transformed and mentioned that other areas has been selected to extend the beautification project. ‘’We are restoring the beauty of Freetown’’, she said.

Madam Aki Sawyer stressed that, they would no longer tolerate anybody or group of people to turn Cotton Tree as a dwelling home or an advertisement centre and spoke about the electricity challenge they were facing prior to the opening of the Cotton Tree light but she quickly demonstrated gratitude to the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) to respond to their call by supplying electricity within the Cotton Tree vicinity.

However, Mayor Aki Sawyer expressed bitterness against those Sierra Leoneans who are in the habit of stealing Government properties and recalled that the Solar which was placed to provide electricity and the chains which were tied round the garden have been stolen.

She encouraged all to serve as watch dogs in protecting the lights and other Government properties and emphasized that, it is their responsibility to beautify Freetown and persuaded citizens to honor their responsibility by paying for their local tax so that FCC activities would be sustained because they needed financial support to sustain all projects.

She lauded Sierra Leoneans who he described as very appreciative for their corporation and further spoke on the important to make sure those legacies are protected to the best interest of the people.
