In Sierra Leone, Maada Bio Rapes 1991 Constitution Again

Sierra Leone’s 1991 Constitution, has since the coming into office of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) Government led by former junta leader, Julius Maada Bio, been subjected to unprecedented violations ever witnessed in the history of the country’s democracy.

It is now a déjà vu to see the country’s constitution been repeatedly raped whenever President Bio and his SLPP take an action or make a declaration bordering on very sensitive national issues.

The most recent of these violations and rape of the country’s 1991 Constitution is seen in President Bio’s declaration of Rape as a National Health Emergency in which he further orders a Life Imprisonment sentence as punishment for rapists.

This declaration has seen many condemnations from both ordinary and legally minded Sierra Leoneans including members of the main opposition All Peoples Congress who view such directive as a complete rape of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone.

According to Lawyer Kalokoh of the main opposition APC, President Bio has no powers what so ever to make such a declaration when the 1991 constitution of Sierra Leone has clearly stated the punishment regarding rape adding that such can only be done by going back to Parliament which is the only body mandated to make and amend laws. Several other Sierra Leoneans have also raised similar sentiments to Lawyer Kalokoh’s and regard the action of Bio in such a sensitive issue as clearly against the constitution.
