In Sierra Leone: Street Gangs in Court for Disorderly Behaviour

The Director of Community Affairs in the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), AIG Edward Kalia Sesay has briefed Journalists in Freetown that a combined team of personnel from Goderich Division and OSD Headquarters conducted raids on street gangs whilst they were pelting stones and broken bottles at one another at Funkia, Crab Town, and Goderich communities.

According to AIG Edward Kalia Sesay who was speaking at a press conference in Freetown continued that during the operation, seventeen (17) suspects who were arrested with knives, machetes, scissors, broken bottles among other offensive weapons have been charged to court with offences ranging from disorderly behaviour, being in possession of offensive weapons and riotous conduct.

Similarly, AIG Kalia Sesay said, personnel from Freetown West Region arrested ten clique members who engaged in a riotous conduct causing mayhem within the Funkia community and mentioned that they were also charged for riotous conduct, disorderly behaviour and throwing missiles. He said they are all in police custody at Goderich Division for further investigation.

He informed his audience that one Hassan Bangura was arrested with Short Gun and eight Tramadol tablets without lawful authority.

He reiterated that Regional Commanders are under instruction to ensure robust patrols, high police visibility and deployment at strategic locations and to step up their intelligence gathering to forestalls public disorder in their Area Of Responsibilities (AORs) and disclosed that day and night patrol are ongoing to curb armed robbery and other relate crimes.

He highlighted that the SLP personnel have been deployed at key installations in the Central Business District (CBD), Sea view Estate Goderich and Special Court to provide adequate security for the three Judges for the Commission of Inquiry at the Special Court building.
