Pharmacy Board warns illegal drug peddlers
A media Officer at the Pharmacy Board Sierra Leone, Emmanuel Jah, has told this medium that the association does not recognize or issue licenses to anyone who does not meet their requirements or goes through the normal procedures to secure approval to trade in drugs but they Have realized that many people are in the habit of flouting the rules and illegally peddling drugs in Freetown and other parts of the country.
He said that, as an association, they have criteria which all registered members abide by and one of their criteria is to see that all pharmacies maintain a conducive atmosphere for medicines which should be stored in a cool and dry place.
He added that ,the rate of illegal drugs users has been on the increase lately and this has created more room for drug peddlers to take advantage and sell drugs illegally in the streets, adding that over the years they have been working assiduously with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation and other organization to sensitise the public that it is not right to sell drugs under a non-conducive environment, especially all this time of the year when the sun which is very hot and can affect the quality and potency of drugs , and have also launched a campaign to sensitize the public about people taking drugs without proper prescriptions and the dangers associated with it.
Mr. Emmanuel Jah said that they have observed that, most of the drugs peddlers are not educated and cannot correctly prescribe medicines, a situation which he said, has led to many people getting affected by diseases they could otherwise have not contracted. He revealed that very soon they will set up another campaign to see that proper sensitization is done and measures put in place to bring to book all illegal drug peddlers with an aim of taking them of the streets.
