Teachers Commence Strike Action

The Voice of Teachers-SLTU, which has been recently licensed to operate as a Union, through this Medium have written to keep the general public informed that negotiations between the Voice of Teachers-SLTU and the various stakeholders in the education sector in Sierra Leone have not been fruitful. The 21 days ultimatum that was given to the government, which started on the 21st November, 2018 and ends 13th December, 2018, has not been taken seriously by the various stakeholders involved in the education sector. As a result of that, the entire membership of Voice of Teachers- SLTU will like to regrettably inform the general public that teachers across the country have decided to embark on A GO SLOW industrial Action commencing today, 14th December, 2018. They are hoping that the issues of teachers’ welfare and conditions of service be resolved in the shortest possible time, with free quality education being the flagship program of this government.

As it was vividly outlined in their last publication with this Medium, that they are asking the SLPP government of Sierra Leone to increase teachers’ salary from Le 750,000.00 to Le 6,000,000.00. They are pinpointing on the fact that their pivotal role creates positive national impacts geared towards the rapid development of any nation. In an interview session, the Chairman of the institution elucidated, Mr. Mohamed Alie Mansaray registered his dismay that if Ministers and Honourable Members of Parliament are paid Le 20,000,000.00 and Le 14,000,000.00 respectively, then teachers deserve better salary and improved conditions of service simply because they taught the Ministers, MPs, Doctors, Lawyers and so on and so forth. In conclusion, he is craving the indulgence of government to adhere to their stipulated demand in other to deter further strike actions.

By and large, Mansaray promised to update the people of this country through this Press, on the documented laudable facilities that have been apportioned to teachers by the late President Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabba (blessed memories), UNESCO and the ILO, of which nothing has absolutely reflected on a single teacher of this Republic.
