MOHS Promises to Organize Exclusive Trainings for CHO’S

Speaking at the 6th Quinqeunial delegate Conference organized by the Sierra Leone Health Service Workers Union (SLESHWU) during the weekend on behalf of the Minister of Health and Sanitation (MOHS), Dr. Alie Wurie promised that enough trainings for Community Health Officers (CHO’s) in various areas like surgery, pediatric and internal medicines are underway.

He cautioned CHO’s to avoid confrontation and look at issues that would benefit the entire institution adding that the post graduate studies which the Ministry is about to actualize is not only for CHO’s but also for nurses and doctors.

He admonished CHO membership to look at how they can interact with MOHS to come up with these important trainings for the benefit of the entire institution. He updated that for the past 15 years, there are no anesthetics except nurse’s aid and doctors adding that over the years, 1500 nurses’ anesthetics have been trained. He disputed the fact that there are gaps in our health system as a nation which he said; we must be able to overcome.

Representing Community Health Officers, William T. Pessima stated that, CHO’s have been a pivotal cadre in the Ministry of Health and Sanitation and highlighted that they have an issue which is in the knowledge of the Ministry but he assured that “The issue will be a thing of the past pretty soon”.

He told listeners that the Ministry can’t succeed in their work without the presence of CHO’s and made it very clearly that CHO’s volunteers are currently working at the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital (PCMH) Cottage, replacing striking junior doctors.
