Police Update The Masses On Recent Happenings

In a well attended press conference at the Police headquarters, Sierra Expressed Media (SEM) was comprehensively updated in conjunction with the recent crime rates. According to the media wing of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), forgery is a very serious crime especially when it involves documents issued by government. One area that this has been reported involves drivers’ licenses. It was revealed that the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has in its custody 54 Sierra Leone drivers’ licenses suspected to be forged found in the possession of Abdulai Chernor Barrie and Michael Kanu of Upper Davies Street and Cox Street, Kissy respectively. It was said that details of the drivers’ licenses were forwarded to the Sierra Leone Roads Safety Authority (SLRSA) for verification both suspects were charged to court on the 16th October, 2018 and warned to have made their next appearance on 19th October, 2018.

It was made crystal clear that strikes in Sierra Leone are mostly associated with violence especially when they involve students. Lecturers’/ Teachers’ actions are mostly attracted by their students as they are affected directly. During the course of about two weeks ago, teachers of the Government Technical Institute, Kissy Dock Yard decided to embark on a sit down strike. The ring leaders were Mr. Mohamed S. Kamara of the Engineering Department and Mr. Ibrahim Sorie Sesay Deen and Reverend Vandi both of the Commercial Department said they will continue with strike action until their grievances are met. They demand the upgrade of the institute into a Polytechnic; improve on their conditions of service, renovation of the Institute’s facilities and replacement of the Principal Mr. J.T. Cole. The reopening of the Institute slated for Monday 8th October, 2018 was postponed to Monday 15th October, 2018 but yet to materialize. Ministry of Education is making frantic effort to resolve the issue.

On Wednesday the 10th October 2018 at 0.600hrs, upon intelligence received a group of Kissy Police personnel left for New York Yams Farm, where a search was conducted in an unfinished house. A large quantity of drugs and assorted medical materials were discovered. Six suspects were arrested and are currently helping the Police in the investigation. The matter is currently investigated at the CID Headquarters. It was stated that Thirty-one (31) Chinese nationals will be deported to their country. Twenty-Six (26) have already been deported, whilst the remaining Five (5) will be deported this week.

Upon intelligence received at 0730hrs on Sunday 14/10/18 a team of police officers left for No. 120 Low cost Housing Estate Site II, Kissy, Freetown, and conducted a search. During the course of the search, the following items were discovered ; One(1) old pistol with no bullet, One(1) pepper spray marked “ police”  and quantity of cannabis sativa , two(2) female and seven (7) male suspects were arrested. The CID kissy Division is investigating the matter. Salamatu Kabia, Proprietor of the United National Vocational Institute and of No. 8 Technical Drive, Congo Cross, Freetown, reported that on 8th October, 2018, the former Acting Principal of the said institute, Lulky Conteh of No. 10 First Street, Moyamba junction, Kissy , Freetown, with intent to defraud embezzled the sum of Fifty Million Leones (Le 50,000,000.00) from the said institute’s account at Rokel Commercial Bank, Freetown and stole therein other valuable property belonging to the said institute.

Six personnel of the SLP including a military officer were affected by the just concluded verification exercise. Tamba Bundufoe of 555 spot, Waterloo, Western Rural District, reported that on 8th October ,2018 at about 1600hrs at the above mentioned address, discovered that 15 months old , Esther Bundufoe fell into hot water and sustained injuries and later subsequently died at the Connaught hospital which appeared to be a foul play as suspected by the victim’s family.

The police week celebration commenced on Saturday October 20th and will end on the 28th October, 2018. There was a procession on Saturday 20/10/18 from police Headquarters to Kingdom police field .The event will cover football, volleyball, Muslim and Christian Thanksgiving services. Other sister forces were also invited.
