APC Needs Reform But…
It is no longer a secret that Sierra Leone’s main opposition, All Peoples Congress (APC) Party needs reformation within its structures in order to position itself well for the herculean task of unseating the current Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) government from power come 2023 elections. It is also not a secret that some of the party’s current executive members are either not equal to the tasks their various positions require or too old to perform in those capacities and hence the need for them to peacefully give way for younger folks within the party to run its affairs.
However, even though there is need for reformation within the party, party loyalists especially the reformist group should be mindful of the fact that everybody is needed in the course of its reformation drive. Members should not be blind to the fact that the old folks of the party have individually, in one way or the other, played a greater role in ensuring that their party was in power for a decade before its defeat in the March 2018 elections. Reformists should also know that there is no way a party can thrive without elders whose advises are always needed in paving the way forward.
It could be recalled that after the APC’s defeat in the March, 2018 elections, many quarters within the party have been calling on its elders including all those who hold executive positions in the party especially the Leader and Chairman, former president Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, who they accused of selling off the party as a result of the unilateral decision he took in imposing the former flagbearer and the running mate during the past convention held in Makeni that led to its defeat in the election, to relinquish their positions and give way to young minds within the party.
Many young folks are now calling for immediate reforms without due consideration to the fact the party’s convention is just around the corner which is to serve as a better way of resolving whatever differences they might have amongst them. Both the young and old folks of the party should know that they both need themselves in terms of driving the party forward and therefore, the reform process of the party should be done cautiously in order to have a win-win situation at the end of the day.
