On Saturday, 29th September, 2018, voters, journalists and opposition members from the country’s main opposition All Peoples Congress (APC), and National Grand Coalition (NGC), suffered untold terror in the hands of thugs from the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) during the Local Council Bye Election held in Tonko Limba, Ward 196, in Kambia district. According to eye witnesses, thugs who were loaded in trucks were seen terrorizing and intimidating voters, opposition party members and even journalists who went to cover the election. This, according to sources was a carefully planned strategy by the ruling party to cause mayhem on voters in the said area in order for them to have a chance of rigging the election which is held on the strong hold of the main opposition All Peoples Congress (APC) Party.
Scores of opposition party members were assaulted during the election including the main opposition Women’s Leader, Madam Elizabeth Mans, former Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, Alimamy Petito Koroma and a host of several others. Journalists, including the Editor of Awareness Times Newspaper, John Koroma, Aruna Kamara of FTN, Ibrahim Sorie of SLBC and a host of other journalists were all assaulted by both police officers and the SLPP thugs.
