Day of the African Child Commemorated in Bo

The Ministry of Children’s Affairs with support from its partners has commemorated the Day of the African Child June 16, with the Theme: “No Pikin Nor For Lef Bien For Salone E Betteh Wan; Leave No Child Behind” in the southern city of Bo.  The ceremony was graced by eminent personalities from Plan International, Youth and Child Advocacy Network (YACAN), Bo Mayor, Child Right Coalition, National Children’s Commission, Chairmen Parliamentary Oversight Committees on Children’s Affairs and Education Minister and the Minister of Children’s Affairs.  The ceremony was held at the Bo District Council Hall Sewa Road on the 16th June 2018.

Chairman Bo District Council Joseph Gbindi expresses his thanks and appreciation to the Ministry of Social Welfare for giving him the opportunity to chair this all important meeting. He describe the theme of this year commemoration ‘Leave no child Behind’ as timely especially so when the government key agenda is in the educational sector.

He maintained that the meeting is important as it gives children the opportunity to speak to the issues and also come out with a position paper that would be presented to government for implementation

Harold L. Tucker Mayor Bo District Council commended the ministry and its partners for commemorating this day in Bo. Leave no child behind he said, is part of the New Directions agenda and the president consider this as his priority. He appealed to youths and adult to help protect the young girls as they should be considered as the feature leaders. Representative of Child Right Coalition (CRC) Revealed that the theme of this year commemoration challenges all stakeholders to put hands together to develop the children. This theme raises the bar of accountability among development partners in ensuring that children are protected and their needs are catered for.

Delivering the keynote address the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Gender and Children Affairs Mohamed Alhaj Kella commended the children for making the day lively and momentous especially their presentations and performance. He  epresses government commitment in ensuring that the life of children’s will be better off under the new direction agenda. He urged all partners to work towards ensuring that teenage pregnancy, child mirage and SGBV cases are eradicated in the country as they move forward. He assured that the government will do all it can to ensure that they recruit child protection officers across the country so as to seek the welfare of children. Mr. Kella admitted that for the free education agenda to be a success there is need to have quality and committed teachers in schools and additional school facilities should be provided in order to have a health learning environment. Committed and competence.

The ceremony was climaxed with a three page position paper being presented to the Resident Minister South for onwards presentation to the president. Resident Minister South Mohamed E.K.Alie delivered a statement onbehalf of the president Julius Maada Bio.
