Shankerdas & Sons (SL) Ltd, one of Sierra Leone’s oldest manufacturing companies (established in 1939) and one which has received accolades not only Sierra Leone but on the continent for its operations and approach. Not only is it one of the few West African companies that is fully ISO-certified (ISO 9001, ISO 14001 for Environment, ISO 17025 for its laboratory, ISO 18001 for Occupational Health and Safety, ISO 22000 for Food/Beverage Safety) but also regularly receives accolades from the international community – most recently being nominated as one of the highest quality companies in the ECOWAS region at the ECOWAS Quality Awards 2017 and participating at the ECOQUAF Conference 2018.

It has a diverse manufacturing portfolio that encompasses Beverages (including Beeta Kola, Luvian Water and RAM soft-drinks), Plastics, Mattresses (under Fomaco brand), Cosmetics (under Mayline brand), and Agricultural produce, among others.

Alongside all this, G. Shankerdas is also one of those companies that take their corporate social responsibilities with utmost seriousness and puts great emphasis on trying to help the development of the country.  The company has contributed immensely to the overall development of not only its local communities but also to the development of many other communities. Year in year out, hundreds of millions are spent by the company on Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) projects including construction of feeder roads, bridges, water wells, providing educational scholarships and materials for the underprivileged, and constant support to community programs and charitable initiatives.

During this Ramadan as every Ramadan annually, it lends great support to its local communities – for example on Tuesday, the 29th of May, 2018, the company presented its annual Ramadan gifts on behalf of constituents to Members of Parliament of its three operational constituencies including constituencies 115, 119 and 120 respectively and various Muslim Jamaats in the east of Freetown. The Ramadan gifts, which included 7 bags of rice, 20 dozen assorted Ram soft Drinks, 25 dozen 1.5 liters, 400 sachets of drinking water and 3 water tanks for each constituencies and a separate 2 bags of rice, 5 dozen assorted Ram drinks and 10 dozen 1.5 liters water for various Muslim Jamaats, forms part of the company’s annual way of patronizing with the Muslim community during the Holy Month of Ramadan.

Presenting the Ramadan gifts items to the Members of Parliament, their Councilors and members of the Muslim Jamaats from various communities on behalf of the company, the Public Relations Officer, Reverend Sawyerr acknowledges the importance of the good relationship that has long been in existence between the company and members of the community. He maintained that the company will always try in its own little way to give back to the community.

Speaking on behalf of the community representatives present to receive the items, Hon. Alpha M. Bah of constituency 115, thanked G. Shankerdas for their kind gestures to the communities and prayed for their continued success in their business endeavors.

Additionally, G. Shankerdas has committed itself to supporting the First Saturday Cleaning initiative every month. In the Cleaning Saturday coming up on the 2nd June 2018, the company is arranging trucks to help clear the dirt from the roads, providing drinking water and soft-drinks to the volunteers, etc.

79 years after G. Shankerdas was founded and in its fourth-generation as a family-run Sierra Leonean company, the company strives to always conduct its business responsibly, to help develop the country as it grows, and with a dream to one day help us show the world the true potential of our great country.
