Brewery Rolls Out Massive Pre-Planting Sorghum Campaign

The Sierra Leone Brewery Limited (SLBL), which has been widely acclaimed for producing best quality alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages such as Star Beer, Guinness, Mutzig, Maltina etc is currently on a pre-planting sorghum campaign targeting residents in the Kailahun, Kenema, Bo and Moyamba Districts.

The objective of the campaign is geared towards encouraging more farmers to grow sorghum in order to timely supply the company with the required amount of sorghum needed for SLBL’s sustainable production of beverages.

At the moment the company is rolling out the campaign in the Kailahun District.

It could be recalled that in February this year a similar campaign was undertaken in the Northern Province. According to the Corporate Relations Manager of SLBL, Albert Ojo Collier,” this campaign will see us increase the number of sorghum farmers and their family members we support across the country which is presently at 25,000 in number.”

He revealed that they are providing seeds for farmers and giving them the required training for planting sorghum with the aim of having a better yield.

Collier made mention of how they have experienced lots of new people interested who have taken up their registration forms to join the Sorghum Farmers Association and be part of the sorghum farmers supplying the company.

He said they are engaging them through radio programs, community meetings and farms visits furthering how they are also engaging the District Agricultural Ministries and other stakeholders.

According to him, SLBL has experienced a short fall in the supply requirement from farmers owing that they have expanded the Brewery with new equipment such as the mash filter equipment and the seven massive fermentation tanks which expanded their establishment.

He said they now need more farmers to grow large quantities of sorghum because their target keeps increasing as sales also increase.

He went on to say that “In fact, we had a one hour radio programme on Radio Moa 100.3 FM in Kailahun from 7:15-8:15pm.” Some of the panelists included Denis Jusu Chairman Sorghum Farmers Association, Albert Ojo Collier Corporate Relations Manager SLBL and Unisa Conteh Corporate Relations Assistant,’ Ojo Collier stated.

Meanwhile, he went on to say that the Brewery has provided formal and informal job opportunities for many Sierra Leoneans including residents of the Wellington Industrial Estate where the Company is situated.

The Company is also noted for honouring its Corporate Social Responsibility as well as timely payment of taxes to the Government.

In a nutshell, the SLBL is immensely contributing to overall national development.
