As he opens his new office Ombudsman Launches Strategic Plan

As he officially opened his new edifice office at Charlotte Street in Freetown, the newly appointed Ombudsman of the republic of Sierra Leone, Melron Nicol Wilson has officially launched the ABC Strategic plan for 2018-2022.

The launching ceremony which attracted high dignitaries from trustworthy institutions including Civil Society Activists and the media was organized at the Conference Hall of the new building from the address mention above, on 26th January 2018.

In his statement, the Ombudsman of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Melron Nicol Wilson, stated that his office is dependable and reliable, with operational autonomy, financial independence and fully accountable in the use of resources with a view to improving productivity, accessibility and visibility of the Ombudsman, thus enhancing the impact of interventions on governance and the delivery of public services.

The Ombudsman educated the general public that the strategic plan for 2018 – 2022 is with a mandate to deliver administrative justice and safeguard human rights in Sierra Leone adding that the strategic plan was developed by the Office of the Ombudsman with inputs from various stakeholders including Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), Civil Society Organizations, the public and with support from a consultant of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

He updated listeners that, ABC is a new code which means A =Able to manage competent staff B = Better Health, Safety, Employment, Financial and Procurement Rules, C = Coordinate Effective Communication Systems and Workforce adding that he will increase the level of media coverage for the office to be able to amend the Ombudsman’s Act, which he said, will help identifY challenges in the investigations of concern issues.

He said the plan will focus on enhancing public confidence, accountability, fairness and a new direction noting that the Ombudsman will immediately pursue the following actions to achieve desired objectives of the Strategic Plan for 2018-2022 and that the ABC modifications are in four segments,(1)a technically competent, internally  cohesive, efficient and effective institution (2) The Ombudsman is autonomous and financially independence (3) The Ombudsman is more visible and accessible to the public ( 4 )The interventions of the Ombudsman impact positively on governance and service delivery.

He appealed to the general public to concentrate on the activities of the ombudsman, because according to him the new office is now capable of addressing over twenty five matter per day with full facilities.  He said the office consist of 25 rooms with a conference hall with an internet facility, adding that the other main aim of the plan is to ensure that the general public understands about the operations and services of the office.

Performing the official launching of the Strategic Plan, the Chairman, Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone, Rev. J. Fornah congratulated the Ombudsman for being so proactive and called on Sierra Leoneans to work with the Office of the Ombudsman to achieve its goals and officially launched the strategic plan.

The Director of Finance, Madam Oniel thanked the Government of Sierra Leone for providing funds for the rent of the office while the Director of HR and support services Abigail E. Gbo Musa thanked UNDP for their support and described the Ombudsman as dynamic with vision to transform the office to state of the art and called on the public to support both financially and technically.

He concluded by talking on the need for continuous public sensitization so that the work of the Office of the Ombudsman can be visible to every citizen.
