Legal Aid Board boss in South Africa for confab on Legal Empowerment

The Executive Director of the Legal Aid Board, Ms. Fatmata Claire Carlton-Hanciles arrived in Johannesburg, South African today, October 30, for a five-day conference on legal empowerment in Africa.

Ms. Carlton-Hanciles will take part in a panel discussion on the work of Paralegals in expanding access to justice. She will speak on the primary justice services provided by the Board’s Paralegals around the country by way of mediating community disputes of a non-criminal nature, providing technical support to the Board’s satellite offices – the Community Advisory Bureaus, providing advice and legal assistance to those accessing the local courts and informal justice system and the conducting legal education through community and school outreach.

She will also speak on efforts at empowering partners in the informal justice sector. For instance, the Board trained forty-four Tribal Heads in the Western Area as Paralegals in March.
