Audit Service Reports, Of What Essence Are They?

Year in, year out, the Audit Service Sierra Leone, under the impeccable leadership of Madam Taylor Pearce performs it constitutional mandate in auditing various institutions dealing with public finance and present the reports to the Sierra Leone House of Parliament for the necessary actions to be taken. But unfortunately, the House of Parliament that has the mandate to act on discrepancies revealed in these reports by bringing those found wanting to book, is doing little or nothing to act on them.

Every year, government and donor partners spend millions of dollars and Leones for the ASL to conduct auditing on institutions but, issues revealed by these report are not acted upon by concern authorities.

This therefore brings the question of the essence of conducting audits on institutions when nothing absolutely is been done on those reports. Every year, the Audit reports reveal lots and lots of unaccounted for funds in institutions but till date, no action has been taken on any the recommendations contained in the reports by Parliament.

It could be recalled in classical example that, the Audit Service conducted auditing on the management of Ebola Funds in which very alarming discrepancies were revealed. Lots and lots of million dollars and Leones donated and provided by government and donor partners were unaccounted for and the Parliamentary accounts committee recommended for certain actions to be instituted in order to recover the lost monies that were missing. Several institutions were asked to return monies unaccounted for to various bank accounts but I can authoritatively state that, no such thing has been done.

How long should we continue losing huge sums of monies without setting precedence on defaulters? Why would government and donor partners continue to spend huge money on auditing institutions when the reports mean nothing to them? Why is Parliament not performing its mandate in taken action on the numerous reports presented to them by the ASL?

Until answers are provided to these questions, the country will continue to wallow in economic hardship as a result of dubious actions meted by some selfish individuals in the country.

However, we commend the effort of the Audit Service for doing the job they have been mandated to do by bringing all discrepancies committed by public institutions. Keep on the good work Madam Taylor Pearce.
