Mad Rush for Sonia Rice

The mad rush for Sonia rice on the market by thousands of Sierra Leonean customers in the capital Freetown and the provinces has attracted many more potential customers, Sierra Express Media has observed.

In a vox pop conducted by Sierra Express Media in Freetown and the provinces, retailers and market women dealing in rice narrated how people are eager for Sonia rice, not because of its uniqueness, but because of its affordability and rich nutrients that provides sound health and energy for body use.

Retailer, Madam Adama Sesay who sells at Guard Street in Freetown, praised the edibility of Sonia rice which she said is imported into the country by a business outfit on 12 Sani Abacha Street in Freetown. She added that the 50 kilogram bag of Sonia rice is internationally standard in terms of measurement and taste. Madam Adama Sesay therefore appealed to other rice retailers to try Sonia rice which she described as the best variety of rice in the country.

Madam Mabinty Tarawallie, a housewife who retails rice at the Kissy Road market in Freetown, said she loves to cook Sonia rice because her husband loves eating it, adding that the variety of rice is sumptuous when eating it with cassava or potato sauce.

She explained that the sale of Sonia rice on the market has not in any way been affected by the wild rumours of so-called plastic rice making the rounds.

“I don’t believe that there is any plastic rice on the market for sale because I have never seen it anywhere in the country,” she said. She vehemently criticized rumour mongers spreading lies that there is plastic rice in the country and promised to always cook Sonia rice for his family because of its quality.
