Member of Parliament Murdered

The Member of Parliament for Constituency 037, Hon. Patricia Dankay Brown has paid special tribute in Parliament to the attacked murder of the British Labour Member of Parliament (MP), Mrs. Jo Fox, which she described as an attack on every MP the world over.

Paying the special tribute in a parliamentary debate last Thursday, the Kambia District MP said the forty-one-year-old British MP was stabbed to death in Bristol in West Yorkshire on Thursday 16th June, 2016 when she was executing her oversight responsibility.

The motion moved by the Majority Leader of Parliament and Head of Government Business, Hon. Ibrahim Rashin Bundu, with regards the murder of the British MP was seconded by the Minority Leader of the House, Hon. Dr. Bernadette Lahai.

Hon. Patricia D. Brown, who is also the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Female Caucus, said the young woman was an active MP with a perfect and faithful character, adding that she would sit in a debate watching the overwhelming outpouring of affection and condolences without contributing on behalf of her constituents.

She stressed that it was an opportunity for her to express her condolences to the British people and dissatisfaction with the manner in which Mrs. Jo Cox was murdered, noting that the act was a serious violation against humanity especially women.

Hon. Patricia Brown noted that such barbaric act was only typical of Africa but it has now been replicated in the Western world.

She stressed that they as women politicians are very much concerned about the political violence in the country, adding that they should denounce all forms of violence against women because of their vulnerability.

The MP also expressed her heartfelt condolences to the family of the late British MP and her constituents.

Hon. Patricia Brown maintained that female parliamentarians in Sierra Leone are afraid of violence against women especially as the country’s presidential and parliamentary elections approach, adding that security must be of paramount concern in the democratic process.

In his contribution, Hon Alhassan Kamara of Constituency 096 in east end Freetown said despite he never know the late Hon. Jo Cox, he disclosed that the late British MP was born in June 1974 in the United Kingdom (UK) and worked in the NGO world.

He described the murder of the British MP as a great shock that has driven fears into MP’s in Britain especially at the timing of her murder, when she was executing her oversight responsibility.

Several contributions and tributes were made in solidarity of the late MP Jo Cox, including Hon. Veronica Kadie Sesay, who expressed the need for Members of Parliament to be provided with security.
