Professor Monty Jones Launches Planting Season

The Honourable Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security, Hon. Professor Patrick Monty Jones on the 6th of May launched the 2016 planting season and the distribution of assorted seeds rice, onions, cow peas, maize, seedlings for oil palm, and other tree crops.

The Minister launched this to prepare the farmers for a successful planting season where in the farmers will be able to nurse their seeds  and transplant on time for maximum yield to be derived by the farmers.  The Minister emphasized on boosting productivity which will lead to increase in income and cut down on the importation of food stuffs that we grow.

Boosting productivity which is the drive of the minister has various activities to be carried on before getting to the mile stone which is increase productivity.  The seed supplied has to meet a germination percentage of at least 90% and it should be certified by Sierra Leone Seed Certification Agency and the supply of inputs is very important such as fertilizers of which the ministry has over 30,000 bags to be supplied to the farmers.  The seed distribution is ongoing in all 13 District Agricultural Districts.  Another symbolic launching was done in Kpetena Village, Bo District in the Southern Part of Sierra Leone.  The farmer applauded the Minister that, this is the first launch of a planting season, and they promised to work hard to support the food drive in the country.
