The Director of Research and Planning who also doubles as the Communications Officer, Office of National Security (ONS), Mr. Francis Y. Kellie, on Thursday, November 26 this year at the weekly Government press briefing at the Ministry of Information and Communications, 8th Floor, Youyi Building, in Freetown, has disclosed that the capital Freetown has over twenty eight vulnerable disaster prone areas.

He disclosed that 40 personnel are being trained by experts on disaster management to give them the necessary skills to work in the Disaster Department of the ONS and other various Ministries, Departments and Agencies across the nation.

Mr. Kellie further stated that in order to meet the emerging challenges, the ONS has designed a threat assessment strategy and National Intelligences Assessment that will both look into possible environmental threats as well as security threats.

The Operation and Extension Director, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Joseph S. Turay said the EPA came into existence by an act of parliament in 2008 as amended in 2010 with a mandate to protect the natural resources and the Environment and advice the government on environmental policies and coordinate with other stakeholders on standards and guidelines to ensure environmental protection and awareness raising on the pros and cons noting that the effect of disturbing the environment is always great when it hit back at you.

Speaking on achievements, Joseph S. Turay said a coastal and marine sanitization mapping has been conducted and validated awaiting public consumption coupled with national environmental Standards on air that will look into air pollutions, quality water and noise that is entertainment centres must ensure that sound proof is made available in all centres.

He said Africa as a continent had done very little in the area of climate change noting that Africa contribution is rated less than three percent hence the need for policies and strategy to mitigate the risks pointing that Sierra Leone will make it presence left on the issue on the 30th November to 11th December, 2015.
